Crossword Puzzle Generator

Generate a crossword puzzle automatically from any topic or word list. Interlocking grid, numbered clues, online play and printable PDF.

Our crossword puzzle generator does the hard part of crossword construction for you: finding where words cross. It tries many layouts and keeps the most tightly connected one, then numbers the grid the way newspaper crosswords do.

How it works: type any topic into the box above, like "Ocean Animals", "Thanksgiving" or "Real Estate Terms", and PuzzleCraft writes a list of 10 to 30 topic words with a clue for each. You can edit any word or clue, remove ones you don't like, or paste in your own list instead. Then the builder fits the words into an interlocking grid, numbers every square and splits the clues into Across and Down.

When the grid is ready you can play it right in the browser with the arrow keys, check your letters, reveal a square, or ask the friendly clue helper for a gentle hint that never gives the answer away. Or print it: every puzzle has a clean printable sheet and a separate answer key, and you can save either one as a PDF from the print window. A share link lets anyone play the exact same puzzle on their phone or laptop.

If a word can't be fitted, the generator tells you which one so you can swap it out and try again in a click.

Frequently asked questions

How does the generator place the words?

It starts with the longest word and fits each remaining word where it shares a letter with words already on the grid, trying many orders and keeping the best result.

Why was one of my words left out?

Occasionally a word has no letters in common with the rest. Swap it for another word or add a couple more words to give it something to cross.

Can I use my own words?

Yes. Paste a list with one word per line (add a clue after a dash for crosswords), or add words one at a time. You can also edit any AI suggestion.

Can I print the puzzle and the answer key?

Yes. Every puzzle has a Print button and a separate Answer Key button. Choose "Save as PDF" in the print window to download a PDF.

Is PuzzleCraft really free?

Yes. Making, playing, printing and sharing puzzles is free. A free account just lets you save puzzles to your library and keep a daily streak.
