How it works: each puzzle is a real quote written in a simple substitution code. Every letter is swapped for a different letter, and the swap stays the same all the way through, so if G stands for E once, it stands for E everywhere. No letter ever stands for itself. Tap a coded letter, type your guess, and it fills in everywhere that letter appears.

Helpful tools are built in: matching letters light up, a letter-frequency panel shows which coded letters appear most, and guesses you've used twice turn red. There's a pausable timer, undo, and your progress saves on your device.

Stuck? Hints come in steps. The first points you to a good place to start, like a one-letter word. The second names a common letter to try. The third fills in one letter for you, and you can reveal the whole quote if you need to. Hints used show on your results card.

Every cryptogram prints or saves as a PDF with the answer key on a separate page. Tick Large Print for bigger letters and spaces.

Every quote is in the public domain: writers and historical figures who died before 1956, traditional proverbs, and Bible verses from the King James Version. The author and source appear when you solve it.

Frequently asked questions

What is a cryptogram?

A cryptogram is a quote written in a letter-swap code. You work out which real letter each coded letter stands for until the quote is readable.

Where should I start?

Start with one-letter words (usually A or I), short words like THE and AND, and the letters that appear most often, such as E and T.

What are the difficulty levels?

Easy uses shorter quotes with 3 or 4 letters already filled in. Medium gives 1 or 2 letters. Hard uses longer quotes with no letters given.

Can a letter stand for itself?

No. In every PuzzleCraft cryptogram, each letter is always replaced by a different letter.

Are the cryptograms free?

Yes. Playing, printing and sharing cryptograms on PuzzleCraft is free with no download.

Can I share a cryptogram?

Yes. The share link rebuilds the exact same puzzle for anyone who opens it.
