Pointing Pair

A box's candidates for a number all line up in one row or column.

Sometimes, inside a box, a number can only go in two or three squares, and those squares all sit in the same row (or column). The box must put that number somewhere in that line, so the rest of that row or column, outside the box, can't have it.

Pointing is one of the most useful Medium techniques. It often clears exactly the candidate you needed to reveal a hidden single in a neighbouring box.

Step by step

  1. Pick a box and a number it still needs.
  2. Mark every square in the box where that number fits.
  3. If they all line up in one row or column, cross that number out of the rest of the line.
